Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices is a live-action collection of twelve five minute episodes featuring prominent Black celebrities and artists reading children's books from Black authors that highlight the Black experience.
The books featured in the series were chosen using a social justice education framework that focused on concepts of Identity, Respect, Justice, and Action.
In addition to the series selections, here are recommendations for additional books, questions, and activities for children of different ages.
The book recommendations, educator guides, videos and information found on this site were developed in partnership with the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, an ALA Affiliate, and the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the ALA.
In order to share these amazing stories more broadly, Netflix has partnered with First Book, a nonprofit who believes that education is the best path out of poverty, to donate and distribute copies of each of the books featured in the collection to educators serving kids in need across the country, and in select international countries.
The Black Caucus of the American Library Association serves as an advocate for the development, promotion, and improvement of library services and resources to the nation’s African American community; and provides leadership for the recruitment and professional development of African American librarians. BCALA has partnered with Netflix to provide age-appropriate book suggestions, topics for discussion, video resources and activities to further conversations among families.
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) is the world's largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. From creative programming and best practices to continuing education and professional connections—ALSC members are innovators in the field of children's library service. ALSC has provided Netflix with a comprehensive list of books related to social justice along with resources for serving diverse communities.
